The invention comprises a compound of the formula <FORM:1018993/C2/1> wherein the ripple mark represents an undetermined configuration and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises treating a compound of the formula <FORM:1018993/C2/2> wherein R and R1 are each hydrogen or an alkanoyl group having not more than 8 carbon atoms, R11 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having not more than 7 carbon atoms with a basic substance in a hydrous or anhydrous solvent medium. As basic substance there may be used alkali metal hydroxide, an alkali metal alkoxide, an alkali metal bicarbonate, or an alkali metal acetate.
