Abstract
1,018,971. Bookbinding. R. O. H. BULL. Nov. 15, 1963 [Aug. 16, 1962], No. 21359/62. Heading B6A. [Also in Division B5] Fibrous materials, e.g. pages of books, are joined by applying a light holding pressure to sheets 13 of the material in the region of their interengaging surfaces and subjecting the sheets 13 to sonic or ultrasonic vibrations in a direction at right-angles to the interengaging surfaces. A magnetostrictive transducer 10 mounted on a support 11 transmits highfrequency mechanical pulses of L wave to a tapered copper horn, probe or wave guide 12. The sheets 13, of paper or fabric of natural or man-made fibres, are supported on an anvil 14 of relatively great mass. The pressure between the anvil 14 and the probe 12 is adjustable by movement of a mass 17 on a pivoted lever 16 having a ram 15 pivoted thereto or by electrical or hydraulic means. On energizing an oscillator 20 and an amplifier 19, high-frequency impulses are transmitted to the transducer 10 while an additional coil winding (not shown) on the transducer 10 generates a pulsed feed-back to the oscillator 20. In modifications, the sheets 13 are held between the probe 12 and a freely rotatable metallic wheel, Fig. 3 (not shown), or are held between two freely rotatable metallic wheels 24, 25, Fig. 4, the probe 14 being in contact with the wheel 25. The vibrations may be at frequencies from 500 cycles to 500 kilo-cycles per second and the magnetostrictive transducer 10 may be replaced by a piezo-electric transducer or moving coils. The probe 12 may, alternatively, be made of stainless steel or cadmium. The holding pressure applied to the sheets during the application of vibrations is between 4 1b. and 200 1b. loading. Specified fibrous materials are nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, paper and wood pulp. The fibrous material may be combined with fillers, plastics or metal foils. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 945,854.
