Abstract

1,017,789. Moderating neutrons. REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND. Dec. 15, 1964, No. 51088/64. Heading G6P. A neutron moderating plug 1 is formed as a tank containing heavy water and is supported in the concrete mass 9. A neutron beam enters at 10 and has a spectrum of the form 11 in which those neutrons having the highest velocity are at the beam centre. Neutrons moving downwards in the region of the centre line pass through a greater length of water than those following the path 14, 15 and are thus subjected to a greater moderating effect. Neutrons moving from the beam are deflected back into it along path 17.
