Abstract

<FORM:1017202/C1/1> Means for controlling the temperature of a charge contained in a lead oxide mill comprises electrical temperature responsive means mounted on the drum, means for supplying a flow of cooling fluid to the drum and means for controlling the supply of said cooling fluid in response to electric signals received from the temperature responsive means. The Figure shows a mill having a perforated rotary drum 1, surrounded by screens 2, the whole being supported on a rod driven by hollow shafts 3, within an outer closed stationary casing 4. A motor 5 and reduction gearing 6 serve to mobilize drum. In operation, the lead charged to the mill by elevator 7 oxidizes on rotation of the mill and the oxide falls through the screen 2. Thermocouples 10 (not shown) inside housing 11 are in close conductive contact with the surface of the drum and send signals via leads 14 to ring gear 15 and thence to a temperature controller 17, which governs the operation of a solenoid-operated valve 18 supplementing the cooling water flow to the inside of the drum. A minimum cooling water requirement is thus constantly supplied via valve 20 and feed pipe 21 from a head tank 19. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the mill includes an unperforated drum 25 into which pieces of lead are blown from charging device 29. Lead oxide formed is blown into classifier 30, coarse particles being returned by means of a conveyer 32 into an air recycle line at B. Suspended product fines are withdrawn from cyclone separator 31 and the air is recycled by blower 26. Controller 17 operates valve 27 in the on or off position to spray water directly on to the outer surface of the drum 25 for a length of time proportional to the temperature of the drum.
