Abstract

1,017,175. Oriented thermoplastic articles. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. May 17, 1963 [May 17, 1962; April 22, 1963], No. 19694/63. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] Strapping made of a crystalline thermoplastic resinous material and having high longitudinal molecular orientation in planes substantially parallel to one of the surfaces of the strap, is formed by rolling an extruded strip of the material, at a temperature below its crystallene melting point, between at least one pair of rollers, to extend the length of the strip at least four times. A strip of the material is extruded through a die orifice 21 (Fig. 5, not shown) shaped to ensure that a cooled strip of rectangular cross-section is formed, and into a water bath cooler 4. The strip is extruded at an angle of 8-15 degrees to the surface of the liquid and passed through the liquid in a straight line parallel to the surface of the liquid. The then cooled strip is withdrawn, preferably at an angle of 8-15 degrees to the surface of the liquid, from the cooling bath, and passed via a dancer arm 9 into a preheater 10. The heated strip is then rolled by pairs of co-operating tongue and groove rollers 12, 13, the strip being momentarily widened by the rolls, during which time the required orientation is imparted to the strip, the width of the pass and the tension in the strip determining the ultimate width of the strapping 30. The strapping then passes through a heat conditioner 15, a wash bath 17, and is wound on to spool 18 for storage. Materials suitable for use in the above process comprise: polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaprolactam, polyoxymethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate (amorphous and crystalline), acetal copolymer, and polypivalalactone. In examples N-ethyl toluene sulphonamide and 2-ethyl hexane diol are used as plasticizers.
