A basic or neutral refractory brick is divided transversely by oxidizable sheet metal elements into sections, each section being at most 40 mm. thick. Asillustrated the elements are integral members of a corrugated unit 9 engaging tabs of comoulded external plates. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), two units of the form shown in Fig. 2 are disposed one on either side of an internal longitudinal plate. In other embodiments, Figs. 1, 4 and 5 (not shown), the elements may be separate sheets of me parallel to the hot face of the brick, with or without a central longitudinal plate, or the elements may be joined to form a unit of zig-zag form.
