Abstract

In a spool Axminster loom, pneumatic pistons on the transfer arms brake a spool hand to prevent it from the rotating as it is being taken from the conveyor chain to the weaving position. The braking pressure is reduced, whilst yarn is being drawn off, to a value appropriate to the diameter of the yarn mass on the spools (which are presumed to all contain the same amount of yarn), the diameter being gauged by a feeler swinging against the next spool on the chain. The full braking pressure is re-applied whilst the spool is being replaces on the chain.
