Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5, F1 and F2] An annular seal 50 comprises an annular resilient body 65, and a ring embedded about the body and formed of rigid segments 66a, 66b pivoted to each other to permit radial contraction and expansion of the seal. The seal may be embodied in well tools pumpable through tubing, in well swabs and paraffin scrapers, or in pistons for pumps or hydarulic rams. The seal is mounted in a recess 51 in the well tool 20, higher pressure of fluid at one end of the tool causing fluid to pass through that end of the recess to enter a chamber 98, and expand the seal against the tubing so that the tool may be forced through the tubing under fluid pressure. The tool is connected to a similar tool 20a and the tool assembly is connected at 36 to a tool such as a plug. Frangible discs 40 may be ruptured by differential pressure to permit retrieval of the assembly by fishing should it become locked in the tubing. The segments may be connected by links. The swab or paraffin scraper comprises a tool in which the disc is replaced by a ball valve and the lip 96 of the resilient body is omitted.
