Abstract
1,016,056. Universal joints. DAIMLER BENZ-A.G. Sept. 18, 1963 [Sept. 22, 1962], No. 36796/63. Heading F2U. A constant velocityratio universal joint that permits relative axial movement between inner and outer members 1, 2 comprises balls 3 in a cage 4 between intersecting grooves 5, 6 formed in the inner and outer members 1, 2 as a mirror image of each other in the plane of ball centres and at least two grooves in each member extend in a different direction to the other grooves in that member. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the grooves are helical and alternate grooves in the inner and outer members are oppositely directed. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the grooves are straight and adjacent grooves in each member are oppositely inclined to a plane through the axis. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the adjacent grooves are also oppositely inclined to the longitudinal axis of the respective member. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the grooves are covered and alternate grooves lie on the surface of a cylinder whilst the other grooves lie on the surface of a cover.
