A twisting machine for the production of wire ropes from a supply source 1 outside the twisting machine comprises a first hollow twisting spindle 4 extending into and rotating with a first chamber 6, such that the wires can be drawn through the twisting spindle 4 and deposited on the inner circumference of the chamber 6 by the action of both centrifugal force and Coriolis acceleration; and a second hollow twisting spindle 9 extending into and rotating with a second chamber 8 such that twisted wires 10 in the chamber 8 can be drawn through the twisting spindle 9, to change the twisting pitch to the desired value, and on to a take up spool 18 mounted outside the twisting machine. The chambers 6 and 8 are alternately filled with and discharged of the rope by turning the arm 7 to align the chambers with the appropriate twisting spindle. In the first twisting spiddle 4 the basic twist is imparted to the rope which in the second twisting spindle 9 the basic twist is reduced to the desired value. A traversing device 5 oscillates the twisting tube 4 to distribute the twisted rope in the chamber 6. The machine includes a drawing device 20 with a rubber pressing roller for imparting a constant advance velocity to the rope elements 2 entering the twisting spindle 4; and a take-off device 17 for drawing rope out through the twisting spindle 9, the devices 20 and 17 being coupled together to rotate at equal speeds. The spindles 4 and 9 are coupled by non- slipping gears 14,14<SP>1</SP> with an interposed non- slipping variator 15 the preset gear ratio of which defines the resultant twisting pitch of the rope 16.
