Abstract
101,588. Kaye, S. March 30, 1916. Bottling; capsules, applying.-In a revolving-table machine for filling and sealing bottles, the filling and sealing heads travel in a circular path, and the cap-pins, to which the bottle-caps are fed from a hopper, travel in and out of this circular path. The filling and sealing heads 15, Figs. 2, 5, and 6, are supported by rods 8 from hangers 6 depending from the axles 5 of wheels 4, which travel between parallel tracks 3 secured to uprights 1. The tracks 3 are circular in plan and undulating in elevation, and in the annular the rods 8 pass through openings in the annular header 11 and the guide 12. Connexion between each rod 8 and its head 15 is made by a counterbored screwed plug 16, so that the capacity of the head can be varied without altering its elevation. The capacities of the heads 15 and the bottles to be filled are made to correspond. The carbonated water is supplied to the heads through spring-pressed valves 32 by hose 23 from an annular channel 22 in the header 11. Radial ducts 24 connect the channel with branch pipes 25 leading from a swivel 26, which turns upon the fixed supply-pipe 27. The valve 32 is operated by a trip-lever 35 pivoted to the guide 12 and connected by a rod 37 to the valve-operating lever 38. When the lever 35 is pushed aside by a bottle entering the head 15, the lever 38 is moved to the opposite side of a cam-track 40 and the valve 32 opened. The rubber ring 41 which clamps the bottle neck is compressed between its cap 42 and a flange 43 to form a tight connexion with the bottle neck. The cap 42 is carried by links 46 from bell-crank levers 44, which are pivoted to the head 15 and carry rollers 48 engaging a cam-rail 49. The bottle-caps pass from the hopper 51 by a shoot 53 to a position over the path of the cap-pins 54. A channel 80, Fig. 7, in the hopper has a groove in the bottom of one edge to receive the flange of a cap, and a sweep 82 removes any caps incorrectly placed in the channel. A spring-supported cup 55 on each pin 54 has two ears adapted to enter transverse or longitudinal slots in the end of the shoot 53 and remove the caps one at a time. The pins 54 are carried by slides 61 having projections engaged by the depending flange of a cam 62, which causes the pins to move in and out of the circular path of the heads 15. When a pin is directly beneath the corresponding head, the wheel 4 of the head reaches a dip in the track. and the cup 55 is depressed, thus forcing the edge of the cap past the ring 65 situated below the capping-cone 66. The bottles are conveyed through the machine by a conveyer composed of three-wheeled trucks 70 travelling on tracks 72. Sprocket-chain links 73 depending from the tracks engage sprocket teeth 74 on the outside of the sleeve 85 and transmit motion thereto. Standards 86 on the sleeve 85 carry the plate 87 which supports the filling- apparatus.
