Abstract

1,015,535. Hydraulic turbine plant. SULZER BROS. Ltd. Jan 13, 1964 [Jan. 29, 1963], No. 1489/64. Heading F1T. A storage pumping plant is connected to at least two storage basins disposed at different heights and includes an H.P. and an L.P. hydraulic machine, each having guide apparatus, both machines being connected to a motorgenerator and at least one of them being a reversible machine (i.e. a machine acting as a turbine for one direction of flow and as a pump for the other direction); means connecting the upper storage basin to the H.P. machine; means connecting the L.P. machine to a lower storage basin; means connecting the H.P. machine to the L.P. machine; and means connecting the H.P. machine to the lower storage basin. The storage pumping plant shown comprises two (or more) groups, each comprising a motorgenerator 2 connected to an H.P. hydraulic machine 5 and an L.P. hydraulic machine 6. When water from a higher storage basin 7 is to be used to produce electricity, it is supplied through pipes 9, 10 to the H.P. machine 5, and all or some of the water leaving the latter may be supplied through pipes 12, 14 to the L.P. machine 6, the remainder flowing through pipe 13 to a lower storage basin 8. The machine 6 discharges to a basin 22. The machines 5, 6 act as turbines to drive the machine 2 as a generator, their guide apparatus being adjusted to give maximum overall efficiency. When water from the lower basin 8 is used, it is supplied to the machine 6 only, and the guide apparatus of the latter is adjusted to give it maximum efficiency. If the machine 6 is not reversible to act as a pump, the machine 5 acts alone as a pump during pumping (the machine 2 then acting as a motor), its guide apparatus being adjusted to give maximum pumping efficiency, and water is pumped from basin 8 to basin 7. If the machine 6 is reversible to act as a pump, it can be used to pump water from basin 22 to basin 8, or the machines 5 and 6 can act in series to pump water from basin 22 to basin 7.
