[Also in Division B5] A collapsible cable reel, having a pair of flanges 11 and a hub or drum portion 13, is assembled by threading a continuous flexible tensile member, e.g. a rope, cable, chain or wire, through substantially diametrically opposed anchor means 21 on alternate flanges to connect the flanges together, and by then rotating one of the flanges relative to the other so as to draw the flanges together thereby to clamp the hub therebetween. There is an odd number of anchor means, which may comprise eye bolts 21, rings, or hooks, on each flange so that the rope &c. criss-crossing between the flanges inside hub 13 leaves the axial region empty for the insertion of a shaft for which nylon bearing members 17, 18 are provided on each flange. The flanges, hub and lagging 14 are formed of outer layers and one or more corrugated reinforcing inner layers of synthetic resin, paper board, metal, fibrous material which may be plastics impregnated, or reinforced glass fibre, the layers being connected by foamed polyurethane. Each layer may be composed of a single ply or of facing members connected by a corrugated inner member. The hub 13 and lagging 14 are formed with transverse grooves so that they may be bent into a cylindrical shape. Alternatively the hub may be formed of a number of arcuate segments. The outer and inner faces of each flange are formed with annular and radial grooves 31 and 33 respectively. Each flange has hub portion 39 and annular groove 34 to support and hold the hub 13. Spring pressed pins 35 lock the hub to the flanges. The flanges may have a tapered periphery 32 fitting into grooves in lagging 14 for the lagging to resist outward forces on the flanges, or alternatively the lagging may have lips extending over the outer faces of the flanges, Fig: 11 (not shown).
