Abstract

A polyamide-urea is made by the condesation of at least one amine of the formula (I) <FORM:1015452/C3/1> where R1, R2 and R3 are divalent hydro-carbon residues and x is a number from 1 to 5, or a mixture thereof with a bifunctional amine and carbonic acid or a reactive substitution product thereof. When the carbonic acid substitution product is urea an o -amino-alkylene urea or o : o -alkylene-bis urea the reaction is effected in two stages firstly at 120 DEG to 140 DEG C. and then at 160 DEG to 300 DEG C. Specified reactive substitution products of carbonic acid (under superatmospheric pressure) phosgene e.g. by the interfacial method) carbonic acid esters, diimidazolyl carbonyls and the above specified ureas. The compounds of the formula (I) may be made by reacting 1 mol. of dicarboxylic acid (e.g. dimerized fatty acids) with more than 1 mol. of diamine, e.g. tetramethylene, pentamethylene, hexamethylene, heptamethylene, octamethylene, nonamethylene, decamethylene, undecamethylene, dodecamethylene and m- and p-xylylene diamines, 9-aminostearylamine, 10 - aminostearylamine, 10 - aminomethylstearylamine, 9 - aminomethylstearylamine, 4:41 - diaminodicyclohexyl methane; ethane and propane, 1:4-bis-[amino-methyl] - cyclohexane, 1:3 - and 1:4 - diaminocyclohexane, 4:4 - and 3:31 - diaminodicyclohexyls 1:1 - bis - (p - aminocyclohexyl)-cyclohexane and 4:41-diamino-3:31-dimethyl-dicyclohexylmethane, the specified diamines also being suitable for use as co-reactants in the formation of the polymers.
