Abstract
101,541. Pupin, M. I., and Armstrong, E. H. Sept. 17, 1915, [Convention date]. Wireless telegraphy.-The receiver is screened from atmospherics by placing a resistance in the aerial; while, to overcome the effect of this resistance on the signalling-currents, an electromotive force, controlled by the signalling-currents, is introduced in the aerial circuit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the aerial 19, 5 contains an inductance 16, resistance 17, capacity 18, and two transformer windings 3, 4. The secondary winding 7 of the transformer 3, 7 is placed in a resonant circuit 7, 8 containing a regulating-resistance 6 and connected through a battery 24 to the grid 14 of a vacuum device 1. The heated electrode 13 and the cold electrode 9 of the device 1 are placed in a circuit containing a source of current 10, an inductance 15, capacity 11, and the primary winding 12 of the transformer 4, 12. When atmospherics tend to affect the receiver, they are damped out by the resistance of the aerial; but when signalling-currents are generated in the aerial, an additional electromotive force is introduced into the aerial by the action of the device 1 and the transformer 4, 12. In a modification, the windings 3, 4 are placed in parallel with a resistance and in series with a capacity; while, in another modification, two vacuum devices and two additional sources of energy are employed. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the grid 14 and hot electrode 13 of the valve are connected across a condenser 18, which is shunted by a resistance 26, and the circuit 13, 9, 15, 10 connected to the aerial through transformers 7, 7<1> and 16, 27 and a second vacuum device.
