Abstract

d -Valerolactone is produced by neutralizing d -chlorovaleric acid with aqueous alkali hydroxide, heating to effect hydrolysis, separating the oily layer of d -valerolactone, adding alkali hydroxide to the aqueous layer to precipitate NaCl, and recycling the filtrate. An organic solvent may be added to the hydrolysed solution to dissolve d -valerolactone, the oily organic layer being separated and distilled. The organic solvent may be benzene, toluene, xylene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene.
