Abstract

The active material of a laser comprises a polymeric host material containing between 10-5 and 10-2 mol. of a chelate of a luminescent cation. Suitable cations are europium, samarium, praeseodymium and ytterbium and the chelate is formed by the reaction of one of the group beta diketones, o-hydroxyphenyl aldehydes, and o-hydroxyphenyl ketones and a salt of the luminescent cation. The host material may be alkyl methacrylates and acrylates or polymers and copolymers of vinyl monomers such as vinyl chloride, vinyl fluoride, vinylidene chloride, vinylidene fluoride, chlorotrifluorethylene, and vinyl ethers.
