Abstract

The invention comprises 1 : 8-dihydroxy-5-phenyl-mercapto-anthraquinones which are substituted in the 4-position by amino or nitro and in which the phenyl radical may be substituted. The dyes are made by reacting 1 : 8-dihydroxy-4 : 5-dinitro-anthraquinone with a phenyl mercaptan in the presence of an amine other than pyridine or a mono-methyl pyridine, and the product is reduced if the 4-amino compound is desired. The phenyl mercaptan may be substituted by chlorine, methyl, tertbutyl and methoxy. Amines specified are ethanolamine, diethylamine, triethylamine, tributylamine, triethanolamine, dimethylaniline, 2 - methyl - 2 : 3 - dihydtoindole, N - methylpyrrolidone, trimethylpyridine and isoquinoline. The dyes dye synthetic fibres including cellulose esters in red to violet shades.
