Abstract

A process for forming an organopolysiloxane elastomer coating on a polymer derived from an ethylenic hydrocarbon comprises subjecting the said polymer to a surface oxidative treatment, applying a room-temperature-curable organopolysiloxane elastomer composition thereto and allowing said composition to cure to an elastomer. The polymer may be a polyethylene, polypropylene or polystyrene. The surface oxidative treatment may include the use of an electron discharge, corona discharge, oxidizing flame, or a chemical treatment such as treatment with ozone, chromic acid or mixtures of sulphuric acid and sodium dichromate. The organopolysiloxane composition may contain an organopolysiloxane gum in which the organo groups are methyl, phenyl, vinyl, allyl or a mixture thereof.
