[Also in Division El] A device for applying a controlled depth of liquid to a surface comprises an elongated cylindrical or regular polygonal bar 10 on the surface of which is formed a thread or series of parallel peripheral grooves centred on an axis which is different from and parallel to the central axis of the bar. The crests 13 and 14 may be truncated. The bar 10 is provided with handles 11 and 12 on which are marked indicia indicating different depths of liquid applied when the bar is held in different positions with respect to the surface to be treated. In use, the bar 10 is rotated to the appropriate setting, the coating composition is placed in the nip 23 formed between the bar 10 and plane surface 20, and the bar 10 is drawn over the surface 20.
