Abstract

The invention comprises compounds having the formulae <FORM:1014414/C2/1> wherein A is an alkylene radical having 2 or 3 carbon atoms, and R11 is an alkyl radical having 1-10 carbon atoms, a phenyl radical or an alkylphenyl radical in which the alkyl moiety has from 1-10 carbon atoms and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises treating 3,3-alkylene dioxy-11b ,17a -dihydroxy-D-homo - 5 - androstene - 18 - nitrile with a metallic hydride while heating and if desired treating the resultant 3,3-alkylenedioxy-11b , 17a - dihydroxy - D - homo - 5 - androsten - 18-imidic acid (11-18)-lactone with an alkane-, benzene- or alkylbenzene-sulphonyl halide in a basic medium at room temperature to obtain the disulphonate. The starting nitrile may be obtained by treating 3,3-alkylenedioxy-17a -hydroxy - 18 - nor - D - homo - 5,12 - androstadien-11-one with a cyanating agent e.g. alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cyanide.
