Abstract

Polyester filaments and fibres which are dyeable with acid dyestuffs are characterised in that they have a concentric outer layer which constitutes 30 to 80% of the fibre cross-sectional area, when dyed and viewed in transverse cross-section, which is dyeable with acid dyestuffs due to the presence in said outer layer of nitrogenous compounds as a result of a treatment with specified polyamines, which nitrogenous compounds function as sites for such dyestuffs. The treatment is effected by treating the filaments in their undrawn condition with an organic liquid comprising a polyamine, drawing the filaments 2 to 6 times their length so that not more than 20% of the cross-sectional area of the filaments is penetrated by the polyamine, as can be seen when the filaments are dyed and viewed in transverse cross-section, followed by heating the filaments in the presence of residual polyamine which is present on the filaments after drawing until a concentric outer layer of the filaments constitutes 30 to 80% of their cross-sectional area. The polyesters may be polyethylene terephthalate or copolyesters of polyethylene terephthalate/sebacate, terephthalate/adipate, terephthalate/isophthalate, or hexa hydro-paraxylylene terephthalate. The polyamines used are non-ionic and should have an average molecular weight of about 110 to 1000, preferably 200 to 600. Polyamines corresponding to the formula NH2 . CH2(CH2 . O . CH2)nCH2 . NH2 where n is 3 to 12 are preferred. The polyamines may be applied by themselves or in solution or dispersion in an organic liquid. The treatment of the undrawn filaments may be effected at 80 to 170 DEG C., preferably 110 to 130 DEG C. for periods of up to 1 minute preferably 1 to 30 seconds. The drawing of the filaments after the amine treatment is preferably effected in water at 60 to 100 DEG C. The subsequent heat treatment may be effected at 100 to 210 DEG C. preferably 110 to 150 DEG C. for 5 to 20 minutes duration. The treated filaments are dyeable with acid dyestuffs such as azogeranine.
