Abstract

The invention relates to compounds of the general formula <FORM:1014047/C2/1> in which R1 and R2 are each hydrocarbon radicals containing up to 3 carbon atoms or may be directly connected together, the sum of the carbon atoms of the radicals R1 and R2 being not greater than 4. Compounds claimed per se are those in which R1 and R2 are each methyl and ethyl. The compounds may be prepared by reacting cyclododecanone with trialkyl-ortho-formates, e.g. trimethyl-ortho-formate or triethyl-ortho-formate in the presence of solvents such as methanol. The higher ketals may also be prepared from the dimethyl- or diethyldetals by ketal interchange under the catalytic action of ammonium chloride with appropriate alcohols such as butane-1,4-diol. In an example cyclododecanone, trimethyl-ortho-formate and methanol are mixed together and heated and cyclododecanone-dimethyl ketal, subsequently distilled.
