Abstract
N,N1 - Dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine is prepared by mixing ammonia and a source of nitrous acid in an aqueous medium and adding formaldehyde gradually at a temperature between 15 DEG and 50 DEG C. Nitrous acid may be used in up to 50% excess over formaldehyde and ammonia in up to 20% excess over formaldehyde. A surface-active agent may be added to improve the physical form of the product, such as dinaphthylmethanedisulphonic acid. The product may be isolated by filtration and the filtrate re-used in the process.
