Leakage in water jackets, detecting; indicators. -An apparatus for detecting leakages in the water jackets of blast furnaces comprises a chamber through which the water from the jacket passes, and at the top of which any gas forced from the furnace into the jacket is collected. The chamber 1 is connected to the outlet from the water jacket by a slightly inclined pipe 2 fitted with a controlling-valve 6 and pressure gauge 10. The water is deflected upwards in the chamber by a baffle 12 and is exhausted from the bottom bv a pipe 3 having an upwardly-turned end, and of a length equal to the height of the jacket above the ground. A gauge 5 indicates the level of the liquid within the chamber, and a thermometer may be fitted in the socket 11. Any gas which collects in the chamber may be expelled through the pipe 4, either by water from the jacket, or by pouring in water through the funnel 14 and pipe 13. In operation, the apparatus is connected up to the water jacket, and after the gas has been expelled by opening the valve 6 the two valves 6, 8 are adjusted until the gauge 10 indicates a pressure slightly greater than atmospheric. Any accumulation of gas in the chamber 1 will then indicate a leakage, probably between the furnace and the water jacket. The gas which collects may be expelled from the chamber and analysed, and the presence of carbon monoxide will confirm the existence of a flaw in the water jacket. In a modification, the chamber 1 is of glass, and the pipe 4 is fitted within and extends nearly to the top.
