In a method of making building elements, comminuted or granular non-metallic material which may be sintered and ceramically bound, e.g. clay or basalt, is heated to a temperature approaching its sintering temperature, e.g. 1150‹ C. for clay, distributed to a required width and depth on a support and compressed to form a ceramically bound mass. In the embodiment shown the material is heated in a rotary kiln 1 and is then dropped to form a bed within an endless-belt mould 2 which is enclosed in a heated base 3. A uniform bed height is obtained by means of a stripper and the bed is compressed by rollers 4, 5 to produce a sheet 6. The sides of the belt mould may be profiled (Fig. 2, not shown), and expanding agents may be added to the material.
