In a closure for a pipe end or an opening in a vessel the pipe end 12 and closure head 10 have bevelled flanges 13, 11, respectively, closure being effected by drawing together two, similarly tapered, semi-circular clamps 18, 19 around the contacting flanges, one or both of the flanges having a reduction in width near the ends of the clamps to minimize the movement of the clamps required to release the clamps from the flange or flanges and permit the closure to be opened. As shown, the head 10 is hinged to the pipe end, and the clamps carry screws 21, the rotation of which results in movement of the clamps towards or away from one another.
