Abstract

1,012,755. Winches. ATLAS-WERKE A.G. Aug. 2, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961; April 16, 1962], No. 29769/62. Heading B8B. In a constant tension device for a steam or hydraulically driven winch the steam or fluid supply for the motor 45, Fig. 3, is controlled by a normally manually operated control valve 33, the movements of which are influenced by the hawser tension. In the example, a shaft 2 carrying the winch drum is driven from a steam engine 45 through spur gears 46, 1, the gear 1 being resiliently coupled to a plate 4 on the shaft 2 through spring links 3 which permit limited relative rotation between the gear 1 and shaft 2 to an extent proportional to the shaft torsion and thereby indirectly proportional to the hawser tension. The relative rotation is transmitted through a linkage system (not shown) to cause axial displacement of a sleeve 15 on the shaft 2 and from which movement is transmitted to the slide valve 33 through a linkage 20, 23. Manual adjustment for presetting the required tension setting is obtained through a threaded coupling 24, 25 which permits relative adjustment between the valve 33 and the linkage system. The winch has a further valve 34 for cutting off the steam supply at predetermined maximum and minimum lengths of hawser. The valve 34 is moved through rotation of a screw-thread device 37 driven from the shaft 2 through bevel gears 36. Manual adjusters 38a, 38b provide for setting both the maximum and minimum lengths by separate adjustment of the two parts 34a, 34b of the slide valve.
