Abstract

1,012,156. Valve gear; cylinders; lubricating. G. R. COLE. Sept. 6, 1962, No. 34195/62. Heading F1B. In a rotary valve engine wherein the cylinder block 2 and cylinder head 3 are cast integrally, a cup-shaped combustion chamber member 45 is situated between the rotary inlet and exhaust valves 4, 5, to shield them from the direct heat of combustion. Each valve comprises a pair of counter-rotating sleeves 34 ... 37 and the cupshaped member 45, carrying the spark plug 54, is secured in a bore 50 by a nut 55 and is lined with a layer 60 of heat-resistant material such as alumina. The sleeves 34, 35, of the inlet valve 5 are driven from a vertical shaft 75, Fig. 6, through bevel gears 131, 133, which also drive spur gears 150, 151, keyed to the sleeves 36, 37, of the exhaust valve. The inner sleeve 36 is splayed at its end 153 to surround the end of the exhaust pipe 157 and the annular spaces 154, 155, are filled with insulating material. Lubricating oil is supplied from a gear pump to a bore 92, Fig. 4, running along the length of the crankcase from which it flows to the crank-shaft bearings and through pipe 87 to bores 95, 96, feeding annular grooves 104 through which the valve sleeves are lubricated. The crankcase 1, cylinder bores 2, and cylinder head 3 are cast integrally, preferably of a light metal such as aluminium, magnesium or their alloys, in a sectional mould designed so that core pieces are not necessary. Finned side plates 11, 12, are secured to the block to form a water jacket 26 and the cylinder head jacket j is closed by a plate 10, secured by a nut 59, with a water outlet connection 25.
