Abstract

1,011,965. Temporary stopping of articles; bumping apparatus. J. W. GREER CO. May 19, 1964 [June 10, 1963], No. 20586/64. Headings B8A and B8B. Article accumulating equipment comprises two parallel endless belts 20, 22 between which is disposed a perforated plate 38, in communication with a plenum chamber 36 disposed below the upper run of the belts and article infeed and discharge gates 60, 70 at the ends of the accumulator which are operated in sequence with dampers 78 on an air pressurizing fan 42, whereby the articles are lifted by air pressure from the constantly moving belts 20, 22 while they are accumulating between the two gates. The infeed gate 60 is pivoted 62 to the framework of the equipment and has an abutment 63 which is engaged between two spring-loaded pins 64, 65. The pin 65 is operated from an hydraulic motor 67 to pivot the gate into-out of engagement with the articles fed on to the equipment by a conveyer 69. The discharge gate 70 is similarly operated to permit discharge of articles on to an output conveyer 82. The air flow control damper 78 is operated by an hydraulic motor 80. Longitudinal side-overhead guide rods 50, 42, for the articles being accumulated are adjustably mounted on frames 43, 54, spanning the width of the equipment at intervals. The gates 60, 70 and air flow damper 78 can be operated manually or according to an impulse from an electric eye positioned at the upper end of the equipment or in a timed cycle where the hydraulic motors for the gates and damper are solenoid operated. In operation, with both gates 60, 70 open, one batch of articles is being discharged while a further batch is being fed in after which, gate 70 closes and the air pressure is increased to lift the accumulating articles from the running belts. When a full accumulation is reached the gate 60 closes for a short period to form a gap between the accumulated and following batches, and the gate 70 then opens as the pressurized air supply is reduced, closely followed by the opening of gate 60.
