Abstract

Organosol compositions comprise a vinyl chloride polymer, as sole polymerizable organic compound present in the composition an ester containing at least two ethenoid groups at least one of which is an allyl group and having a boiling point not less than 50 DEG C., a non-polymerizable plasticizer, a volatile organic liquid, a chemical catalyst for the polymerization of esters of ethylenically unsaturated alcohols and a stabilizer which comprises barium (zinc octoate, cadmium laurate, cadmium/barium laurate or barium ricinoleate. Specified esters are ethylene glycol bis-(allyl carbonate), triallyl phosphate, triallyl cyanurate, diallyl phthalate, allyl acrylate and the multiple ester derived from 3 moles of maleic acid, 2 moles of ethylene glycol and 2 miles of allyl alcohol. Prepolymers of these esters may be used. The volatile liquid may be a hydrocarbon, ester or ketone. The catalyst may be benzoyl peroxide or t.-butyl perbenzoate. The compositions may be used for coating, e.g. metals, and the coatings cured by heating. An example describes organosols comprising polyvinyl chloride, phthalate ester plasticizer, diallyl phthalate, titanium dioxide, t.-butyl perbenzoate, xylene, toluene and the specified stabilizers.ALSO:Metal substrates may be coated with organosol compositions comprising a vinyl chloride polymer, as sole polymerizable organic compound present in the composition an ester containing at least two ethenoid groups at least one of which is an allyl group and having a boiling point of not less than 50 DEG C., a non-polymerizable plasticizer, a volatile organic liquid, a chemical catalyst for the polymeriza-tion of esters of ethylenically unsaturated alcohols and a stabilizer which comprises barium/zinc octoate, cadmium laurate, cadmium/barium laurate or barium ricinoleate. Specified esters are ethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate), triallyl phosphate, triallyl cyanurate, diallyl phthalate, allyl acrylate and the multiple ester derived from 3 moles of maleic acid, 2 moles of ethylene glycol and 2 moles of allyl alcohol. In an example mild steel is coated with compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, phthalate ester plasticizer, diallyl phthalate, titanium dioxide, t.butyl perbenzoate, xylene toluene and the specified stabilizers, and the coatings cured by heating.
