Abstract

Saturated aliphatic aldehydes are made by contacting a mixture of unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde and hydrogen with a catalyst comprising Ni and Fe, both wholly or mainly in metallic form and a promoter selected from salts or oxides of alkali metals, Al, Cr, Mn or Mg or mixtures of such salts and/or oxides, supported on a carrier in amounts such that Ni to Fe is in the range 4 : 6 to 9.5 : 0.5 and the ratio Ni+Fe to promoter is 7 : 3 to 9 : 1. The preparation of butylaldehyde from crotonaldehyde is exemplified, the main by-product being butanol. Reaction may be effected in gaseous or liquid phase, preferably at 90-150 DEG C., and with a hydrogen partial pressure of 3-20 kg./cm.2 Example 3 describes the preparation of propionaldehyde from acrolein and Example 6 2-ethyl butylaldehyde from 2-ethylcholenaldehyde.ALSO:A hydrogenation catalyst is made by immersing a carrier in particulate form, e.g. crushed pumice, in an aqueous solution containing iron nitrate and nickel nitrate and a promoter source selected from aluminium, alkali metal, magnesium, manganese or chromium salts or mixtures thereof, drying the particles, heating the dried particles to a temperature of approximately 450 DEG C. and reducing them at that temperature with hydrogen, the ratio by weight of Ni to Fe being 4:6 to 9,5:0,5 and the ratio by weight of Ni plus iron to promoter being in the range 7:3 to 9:1. Al2O3 is mentioned as an alternative carrier and comparative examples are given.
