Abstract

1,010,960. Motor vehicle independent suspension. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 23, 1964 [June 27, 1963], No. 25957/64. Heading B7D. In an independent suspension, a compensating spring which resists movement of the near and off-side wheels in the same direction or of unequal magnitude in the opposite direction consists of a torsion bar connected at each end to the respective wheel suspension members and comprising a central portion of U- shape. In Figs. 2, 3 the ends 39, 40 of the torsion bar 38 are mounted in rubber-bushed bearings on suspension links 29, 30 swinging about inclined axes 31, 32, and the U- shaped central portion 47 is supported by a bearing 48 on an arm 51 connected to the superstructure 62 by a hinge 53, both the bearing 48 and the hinge 53 including rubber bushes. The wheels 16 are driven either by shafts 34, 35 which swing about the axis 36 of a joint 37 connecting one shaft 35 to a differential 33 rigid with the other shaft 34, or by double-jointed shafts connected to a differential mounted rigidly on the superstructure. In modified arrangements (Figs. 4, 6, 7, not shown) loops are formed on the torsion bar where the limbs 47a, 47b of the U-shaped portion join the end portions 39, 40, the limbs 47a, 47b are supported in bearings pivotally suspended from the superstructure, and only a single bearing for the each end portion 39, 40 is provided on the links 29, 30. In Fig. 5 the torsion bar 56 is mounted in bearings on swing axles 10, 11 and includes two U-shaped portions 57a, 57b combined in an 8-formation not supported from the superstructure. In another arrangement (Fig. 1, not shown) for swing axles guided by longitudinal links and sprung by coil springs, the torsion bar has a central U-shaped portion supported by a rubber-bushed bearing connected to the superstructure for universal movement or to pivot about a longitudinal axis. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 908,084.
