Abstract

Workpieces are tumbled in a rotating or vibrating device with sintered bauxite. Natural bauxite is calcined and reduced to a fine particle size, compacted to form agglomerates having the desired range of sizes, and the agglomerates are sintered. The material may have a random shape or be formed into triangles, triangular pins, circular pins, spheres, slugs or cones. The sintered agglomerates preferably have an average crystal size of 5 to 8 microns.
