Abstract
Polymers of a -olefins are modified by mixing them with a minor proportion of a monomeric compound containing two acrylamide groups and heating the mixture. Suitable acrylamide modifying agents are those having the general formula: <FORM:1010760/C3/1> in which R is an alkylene, alkylidene, phenylalkylidene, hydroxyphenylalkylidene, or alkylphenylalkylidene group. Many are listed; those exemplified are methylene - bis - (acrlyamide), ethylidene - bis - (acrylamide), benzylidene - bis - (acrylamide), and salicylidene - bis - (acrylamide). Polymers of a -olefins exemplified are polyethylene, polypropylene, and a copolymer of ethylene and propylene; a number of others are listed. The polymer may be in the form of flakes or moulding powder granules which are dry mixed with the modifying agent, or the modifying agent may be dissolved in a low boiling liquid and the resultant solution mixed with the polymer, preferably in flake form, and the solvent evaporated off. No catalyst is used in the reaction. Conventional additives such as fillers, pigments, dyes, plasticizers and resins may be added. In some examples the stabilization is effected with mixtures of calcium stearate, dilaurylthiodipropionate and either the reaction product of 4,41-n-butylidenebis - (2 - t. - butyl - 5 - methylphenol) with diphenyliso-octyl) phosphite or the reaction product of nonyl phenol and acetone. The modified polymer may be cast into films.ALSO:N,N1 - Ethylidene - bis - (acrylamide) is prepared by reacting vinyl acetate and acrylamide in the presence of mercuric acetate, hydroquinone and sulphuric acid.
