Abstract

Epoxides are prepared by oxidizing an olefine or a compound containing an olefinic bond with molecular oxygen in a liquid reaction medium comprising at least 20% by weight of a fully esterified carboxylic polyacyl ester of a polyhydroxyalkane, of a polyhydroxycycloalkane or of a polyglycol, or a mixture of such esters. Many suitable acyclic and alicyclic glycols, polyols, polyglycols and carboxylic acids from which the solvent esters may be derived are given. Oxidation catalysts and initiators, and inert diluents, may also be present. The reaction temperature may be e.g. 50-400 DEG C., and suitable pressures are 0.2 to 350 atmospheres. In examples the following are epoxidized: (1), (6), (7), (14), (16), (22), (24) propylene; (2) 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene; (3) (15) 2-methyl - 2 - butene; (4) propylene tetramer; (5) cyclohexene; (8), (18) butadiene; (9) vinylcyclohexene; (10), (19) styrene; (11)-(13), (17) ethylene; (20) 1-phenylcyclohexene; (21) 4-vinyl-cyclohexene. Other olefinic starting materials are listed.
