Abstract

1,009,879. Pneumatic tyres. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. June 25, 1964 [Aug. 12, 1963], No. 26290/64. Heading B7C. To avoid cord fraying or rupture in a new or retreaded pneumatic aircraft tyre with bead portions 12 connected by a carcass 11, a radially outer tread reinforcing ply 15 is formed of segments 15A each comprising cords parallel to parallel grooves 19 extending at an acute angle, preferably between 15‹ and 45‹, to the mid-plane and forming intervening traction ribs 18. As shown, additional tread reinforcing plies 16, 17 lie radially inwardly of the ply 15. In the green tread (Fig. 3) the cords of the ply 15 are evenly spaced across the tread, being forced apart into segments 15A by parallel ribs 29 of the mould tread matrix 28 so that they do not extend across the base 32 of the grooves. The grooves may be interrupted or portions thereof on one side of the mid-plane may be circumferentially offset from portions thereof on the other side.
