A jib 10, Fig. 1, is luffed by a race 14 which is pivoted to the jib at 13 and moved to and fro by an electric motor and a pinion on the slewing superstructure 11. The drive pinion is held in contact with teeth 20, Fig. 3, of the rack by wheels 29. Stops 32 co-operate with spring buffers 33. Limit switches 34 for the motor are operated by ramps 37.
