Abstract

<PICT:1008690/C1/1> <PICT:1008690/C1/2> A composite glass-metal body comprises a part formed of a metal having metallic electric conductivity joined in a vacuum-tight manner to a glass part and at the location of the joint the glass part comprises vitreous material containing between 0.5% and 32% by weight of germanium dioxide, preferably 4% to 20%. The glass part may be wholly of the GeO2 containing material or may be of different glass joined by a layer of the material, in each case the glass part is chosen to have a coefficient of expansion corresponding to the metal used. Metals used are copper, nickel, iron and alloys thereof. A layer of the material may be heated on the metal part in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to melting temperature. A glass part containing no GeO2 may then be sealed to the layer. Alternatively GeO2 mixed with a binder and powdered glass may be compressed and heated in contact with the metal part. In Fig. 1a, a bushing comprises a glass filling 2 securing metal leads 3 in a metal envelope 1. In Fig. 2, a transmitting tube comprises glass components 4 and 5 joining a metal ring 6 and caps 7. Several examples of suitable glasses are given within the following range in percentages by weight: SiO2 57.5-70.2; B2O3 0 or 22.0-25.0; NaO2 2.5-17.0; K2O 1.0-8.0; Li2O 0-0.5; CaO 0-5.4; BaO 0-11.0; MgO 0-3.9; Sb2O3 0-0.3; Al2O3 0.5-4.0; GeO2, in only specific example, 10.7.
