Abstract

Aqueous non-gelling solutions are prepared from reaction products of a polyalkylene imine, optionally with a polyalkylene polyamine, and an apihalohydrin or dihalohydrin in a molar ratio of halohydrin to imino and amino groups of 1: 0.5 to 1: 2. Examples of polyalkylene polyamines are diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine and tetra-ethylene pentamine. The preferred reaction products are of polyethylene imine and epichlohydrin; other imines specified are 1,2-propylene-, 2,3-butylene-, C-propyl ethylene-, C-n-butyl ethylene- and C-benzylethylene imines. The solutions are prepared by carrying out the reaction in water. Uses.-Improving the wet strength of fibrous cellulosic materials. Specification 996,388 is referred to.ALSO:The wet strength of paper and cardboard is improved by adding to the aqueous pulp an aqueous solution of a reaction product of a polyalkylene imine, optionally with a polyalkylene polyamine, and an epihalohydrin or dihalohydrin in a molar ratio of halohydrin to imino and amino groups of 1 : 0.5 to 1 : 2. The preferred reaction products are of epichlorhydrin and polyethylene imine to which diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine or tetraethylene pentamine may be added. In Example 5 the solutions are added to unbleached, unbeaten Kraft pulp. Specification 996,388 is referred to.
