Abstract

A fabric of material non-absorbable in the body e.g. 'Teflon', 'Dacron', 'Vinyar', 'Orlon', (Registered Trade Marks) cotton or silk is incorporated with collagen fibrids to form a fabric for use in prosthetic surgery (see Division A5). The fabric may be woven, crocheted, knitted or braided to form a film, tube or y-tube, the collagen fibrids being deposited on both sides of the fabric, the interstices of which are sufficiently open to permit the fibrids to extend through them. A multifilament strand of the non-absorbable material may be woven with a multifilament strand of collagen to form the fabric.ALSO:A surgical prosthesis or prosthetic material comprises a fabric which is non-absorbable in body fluids and in which collagen fibrils are incorporated. The non-absorbable fabric or filaments comprise synthetic fibres e.g. "Teflon," "Vinyon, "Dacron" or "Orlon" (Registered Trade Marks) or cotton or silk. A dispersion of collagen fibrils is applied to the non-absorbable fabric in a tray and after freezing is dehydrated with isopropanol to which is added sufficient ammonium hydroxide to neutralize the acid. The fabric thus coated on both sides with collapen fibrils is squeezed and dried by heat. Alternatively, the dispersion of swollen collagen fibrils is passed through a spinnerette into an acetone dehydrating bath and then dried to form a multifilament collagen strand which is woven, knitted, braided or crocheted with filaments, which are non-absorbable in the body, to form a fabric. The collagen dispersion may be introduced into a glass tube along the axis of which is a glass rod covered with rubber sleeve, a prefabricated tube of non-absorbable fabric being spaced from the rubber sleeve so that it becomes coated with the dispersion on both sides. After freezing and dehydrating, the coated fabric tube is withdrawn from the glass tube and is used as a prosthetic replacement of a body passage e.g. an artery. In fabric tube may be reinforced with rings or a helix made of "Teflon" before coating with collagen fibrils.
