Abstract

1,007,887. Hydraulic transmission of power. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. Feb. 27, 1962 [March 6, 1961], No. 8108/61. Heading F2D. A hydrostatic transmission comprises a positive displacement pump 2, Fig. 1, connected to a positive displacement motor 5 in which the displacement of the pump and/or motor is controlled by a signal of pump speed so as to maintain the motor speed constant over a range of pump speeds. As shown, the pump is driven from an engine 1 and the displacement of the pump is controlled by a servomotor 37 whose cylinder is movable axially by a manual control lever 43 to determine the control setting. The engine also drives a gear pump 6 which feeds a speed signal device 7 providing a pressure differential, responsive to speed, which is fed by lines 35, 36 to the opposite sides of the spring- loaded servo piston 39. The outlet of the device 7 is preferably fed to a valve unit 9 which controls make-up fluid for the transmission. The device 7, Fig. 2, comprises a spring-loaded valve member 22 having a through passage 25 formed with a restriction 26. The passage also leads to slots 28 by a transverse passage 27. At low engine speeds the restrictor 26 causes a pressure drop insufficient to move the valve 22. As the speed increases the valve 22 moves to open the slots 28, the degree of opening depending on the speed 5 and thus the pressure differential fed through lines 34, 33 to the servomotor is proportional to the speed. The valve 22 may be by-passed by a manually-controlled valve 31 which, when open, provides a fixed restriction for the flow path. Specification 1,007,888 is referred to.
