Abstract

Synthetic crystalline zeolitic molecular sieves, especially zeolites A, X and Y (see Specifications 777,232, 777,233, 909,266), are made from an aqueous mixture, by a process which comprises forming an aqueous reactant system having an initial overall composition defined in terms of oxide mole ratios R2O/SiO2=a, SiO2/Al2O3=b, H2O/R2O=C, where a, b and c are the essential determinants for the type of zeolitic molecular sieve desired, R is an alkali metal and at least the major source of silica, alumina or silica and alumina is a naturally occurring alumina silicate which has been subjected to attrition treatments, until its residual crystallinity is a maximum of 30% and preferably 15% according to its X-ray diffraction pattern, and the zeolitic molecular sieve is crystallized from the reactant mixture at 20 DEG to 120 DEG C. Attrition may be carried out using an automatic mortar and pestle, vibratory ball mill, or mills of the roller, pebble, rod, tube, disc, attrition, fluid energy or jet type. Specially suitable starting materials include kaolinite, dickite, nacrite, endellite, halloysite, anauxite, montmorillonite, beidellite, pyrophyllite, muscovite or paragonite. The attrited minerals may be compressed into a shaped body and added to the aqueous reactant mixture and subjected to crystallization to form the zeolite within the body. The examples, which include comparative data on the use of non-attrited alumino silicate, describe the syntheses of zeolites A, X, Y and B. Specifications 841,812, 864,707, 868,846, 909,264, 912,936, 972,831 and U.S.A. 3,008,803 also are referred to.
