Abstract

1,007,491. Lubricating; toothed gearing. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. May 23, 1963 [June 4, 1962]; No. 21423/62. Headings F2A and F2Q. [Also in Division B1] A lubricant filtration system for a vehicle rear axle gear comprises felted or matted pads A. B. C. of fibrous material, preferably wool, which are positioned in the gear casing so as to be in the oil stream created by rotation of the crown wheel 3. The pad A is positioned around the drive shaft of the pinion 2, the pad B partly encircles and is spaced from the crown wheel 3 and the pad C is arranged in the casing sump. The three pads A, B and C are fixed by spring clips 12, 13 and 14 respectively. The oil stream is indicated by the arrows and during operation of the gear mechanism, the oil is thrown on to and made to flow over the surface of the pads thereby entraining the wornoff metal particles. The pads are normally only fitted for the running in period and when they become clogged their pads can be removed, and there is little need to insert a new one.
