Abstract

1,007,270. Embossing surfaces. MODERN ENGRAVING & MACHINE CO. Aug. 11, 1964, No. 32596/64. Heading B6C and B6J. A metal roller for embossing material with a stucco pattern is formed by manually applying, e.g. by means of a sponge, a resist to the metal in random patches 14 and etching the exposed metal areas 20. This operation may be repeated two or three times, if desired, the resist subsequently being washed off. Before the etching step, parts 22 of the patches may be removed by means of a sharp tool 16. Any sharp edges may be removed by etching the cylinder over all its surface. If it is desired to reduce the depth of the etched recesses, the cylinder may be sprayed with a resist as it is rotated, so that the resist tends to fill the recesses, and rotating the cylinder in an etching bath. After this operation, sharp edges may be removed by overall etching or by means of a rotary wire brush. Surface hardening of the roller may be effected by flames issuing from a multi-apertured pipe. A mating cylinder may be formed by uniformly coating a metal cylinder with resist, rotating the cylinder in contact with the first cylinder by gears so as to remove the resist from the mating cylinder where the raised parts of the first cylinder engage it, and then etching the mating cylinder.
