Abstract

1,006,847. Securing thermoplastic sheets to articles. A. WINDMOLLER, and M. GEN. NERICH. March 26, 1963 [March 26, 1962], No. 11948/63. Heading B8F. [Also in Division B5] Blanks in the form of inserts or covers of synthetic plastic or plastic-coated material are welded on to continuously moving unheated sacks or bags by heating each blank in the areas to be welded during conveyance to the welding station and during further transportation the blank is placed on, and pressed into engagement with, the sack or bag as it passes the welding station. In the embodiment shown for welding inserts into the open bottoms of cross-bottom valve bags the inserts are cut transversely from a web 6 fed through rollers 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 at a station 13, the cuts not extending completely across the web but being connected by bridges. The web 6 is fed to a cylinder provided with heating elements 2, 3, 4, 5, Fig. 3, in a surrounding jacket. The leading end of the web 6 is clamped against the element 2 by a rotating member 14 and impaled on a row of needles 15 on a bar 16 connected, through a lever 17, to a control shaft 18 operated by a cam 23 so that the needles 15 project through apertures in the element 2 during feeding of an insert. The peripheral speed of the cylinder 1 is greater than the speed of the web 6 so that the gripped insert is torn away from the remainder of the web. At the discharge position of the cylinder 1 the needles 15 are withdrawn and the insert is inserted by pressure into the open bottom of the flat sack, a support roller 24 being provided. Two further heating elements elements 25, 26 are provided and are each secured to a carrier 27, 28 so that they can be lifted by a magnet 29 when the machine drive is switched off. A switch (not shown) may also be provided to switch off the elements 25, 26 when pivoting takes place. The elements 3, 4, 5, 25, 26 may be adjustable perpendicular to their lengths to suit different insert sizes and the element 5 may be exchangeable. Each of the jacket surface portions 31, 33 may have a longitudinal groove of dove-tail cross-section extending parallel to the cylinder axis and in which the elements 3, 4 may be adjustably mounted. Alternatively, a row of thread holes, engaged by screws on the elements 3, 4 may be provided in the portions 31, 33. The heating elements may be heated directly by electrical resistances or by heating members arranged in the underlying jacket surface. The three jacket portions 31, 32, 33 are preferably heated independently of each other. Instead of being impaled on the needles 15 by the body 14 each insert may be clamped against the element 2 by a camoperated jaw.
