Abstract

<PICT:1006753/C3/1> Particulate material is encapsulated by pyrolyzing a cyclic di-p-xylylene of formula <FORM:1006753/C3/1> where R is a nuclear substituent group (e.g. alkyl, aryl, alkenyl, amino, cyano, carboxyl, alkoxy, hydroxy alkyl, carbalkoxy, hydroxyl, nitro or a halogen atom) and x is a number from 0 to 3, at 450 DEG C. to 700 DEG C. to form divalent radicals of formula <FORM:1006753/C3/2> which are contacted with the surfaces of particles in constant motion and at a temperature below 200 DEG C., so that the divalent radicals condense on the surface of the particles and polymerize to coat the particles with a continuous polymer film of poly (p-xylylene) having units of formula <FORM:1006753/C3/3> The di-p-xylylene may be vaporized in a zone b of a tube 11 (Fig. 1) at 150 DEG to 200 DEG C, pyrolyzed to a zone a at 450 DEG to 700 DEG C., and the divalen tradicals passed into a coating chamber 23 rotated by a motor 25 in which the particles are tumbled by baffles 21. A vacuum pump is connected to an aperture 27 in a wall 19 surrounding chamber 23. In examples pellets of lithium aluminium hydride, lithium perchlorate, lithium fluoride, metallic lithium, sodium hydroxide, lithium tetraborate and lithium hydride, molecular sieves loaded with ethylene, and gravel, are encapsulated, and the polymers used are poly-(chloro - p - xylylene), poly - (di - chloro - p - xylylene), poly - (bromop - xylylene), polycyano - p - xylylene), poly - (ethyl - p - xylylene) and poly (p-xylylene).
