Abstract
Curable coating compositions comprise (1) a full acetal of a vinyl polymerized unsaturated aldehyde, said acetal being formed from a monohydric alcohol, and at least 5% based on the resin solids of the composition of (2) a polyol having a hydroxyl value in the range of from 40 to 1400. The acetal (1) may be made by reaction between a homopolymer or copolymer of acrolein and an alkanol or alkenol. The polyol (2) may be a glycol or higher polyhydric alcohol, alkylene oxide reaction products of polyols and amines, and alkyd resins. The examples describe compositions comprising the methyl or n-butyl acetals of polyacrolein, a solvent and one of: (a) an alkyd resin derived from 1,3 - butanediol, trimethylolethane, adipic acid and phthalic anhydride, (b) an alkyd resin derived from linseed oil, glycerol, pentaerythritol and phthalic anhydride, (c) a polyoxypropylene derivative of trimethylol propane, (d) a polyoxypropylene derivative of a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer, and (e) an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide derivative of sucrose. Coatings made from the compositions are cured by heating. Specifications 616,291 and 797,459 are referred to.ALSO:The surfaces of phosphated steel panels are coated by applying thereto compositions comprising (1) a full acetal of a vinyl polymerized unsaturated aldehyde, said acetal being formed from a monohydric alcohol and at least 5% based on the resin solids of the composition of (2) a polyol having a hydroxyl value in the range of from 40-1400. The examples describe coating phosphated steel panels by applying thereto compositions comprising the methyl or n-butyl acetal of polyacrolein, a solvent, and one of: (a) an alkyd resin derived from 1,3-butanediol trimethylolethane, adipic acid and phthalic anhydride, (b) an alkyd resin derived from linseed oil, glycerol, pentaerythritol and phthalic anhydride, (c) a polyoxypropylene derivative of trimethylolpropane, (d) a polyoxypropylene derivative of a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer, and (e) an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide derivative of sucrose. After application, the coatings are cured by heating. Specifications 616,291 and 797,549 are referred to.
