Abstract

Rubbery polymers are made by polymerizing in a hydrocarbon solvent conjugated dienes containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms in the presence of an organometallic catalyst, preferably of the Ziegler-type, to first form a mix containing at least 6.5% polymer and then, by maintaining in the polymerization mix a monomer concentration of 0.5 to 29%, a solvent concentration of 92 to 39%, and removing heat from the polymerizate to maintain a temperature in the range of 0 DEG to 90 DEG C., continuing the polymerization until a polymer solution containing at least 10% of polymer is obtained. The heat removal may be effected by a partial evaporation of solvent. The solvent may comprise 1 to 20% of an extender oil. The diene may be butadiene, isoprene, pentadienes, hexadienes or heptadienes. The Specification includes a flow diagram of a continuous method for carrying the process into effect. Exemplified dienes are butadiene and isoprene. Exemplified catalysts are aluminium triisobutyl and TiI4, aluminium triisobutyl and TiCl4 and I2, aluminium trisobutyl diphenyl etherate and TiCl4, and tetramethylene dilithium. Polybutadiene prepared by the process has the following properties: (1) at least 80% cis content; (2) an inherent viscosity of 1.7 to 3.5 at 30 DEG C.; (3) less than 5% gel content; (4) a cold flow at 50 DEG C. of less than one milligram per minute; and (5) a solubility at 25 DEG C. on a weight per cent basis in a mixed solvent consisting of benzene and methanol of not more than 60 when the methanol content of the mixed solvent is 18%, not more than 40 when the methanol content of the mixed solvent is 19%, and not more than 20 when the methanol content of the mixed solvent is 20%.
