Abstract
1,005,625. Cams; conveying oscillating motion. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 19, 1964 [April 16, 1963 (3)], No. 11663/64. Headings F2K and F2Q. [Also in Division B7] A remotely controllable rear-view mirror mounted by a bracket 22, Figs. 2 and 4, on a motor vehicle door 14 comprises a cylindrical housing 20; a synthetic plastic support 40, for a mirror reflector 52 and universally pivotally mounted on a spherical head 30 on the housing to permit pivotal movement about two axes at right angles to each other; cam members 61, 62, Figs. 4 and 5, independently rotatable about the axis of the housing and head, both members 61, 62 engaging ramps 54, 58 and 56, 60 on the rear of the support 40 for positioning the latter relative to the housing; axially displaceable cables 84, 86 for rotating the cam members 61, 62; and a manual actuator 18 for displacing the cables. As shown in Fig. 6, the mirror support has a central circular opening 50 with diametrically opposed channels 46, 48 and surrounded by the ramps 54, 56, 58 and 60 in circular formation. The opening 50 receives with a clearance the head 30 which is secured to a boss 24 on the housing 20 by a screw 28, the boss rotatably mounting the cam members 61, 62 one upon the other. The members 61, 62 each have a pair of opposed arms having projections thereon to engage the pairs of ramps 54, 58 and 56, 60 respectively. The support 40 is held against the cam members by a bent wire 34 passing through a slot 32 in the head 30 and having its ends engaging in grooves 36, 38, in the support 40. The head 30 has lugs 42, 44 thereon to engage in the channels 46, 48 and prevent rotation of the support about the axis of the housing. By rotating the cam member 61, Fig. 4, the support is pivoted on the head about a horizontal axis, i.e. an axis perpendicular to the plane of the Figure. By rotating the cam 62, Fig. 5, the support is pivoted on the head about a vertical axis i.e. an axis perpendicular to the plane of that Figure. The cables 84, 86 are connected at 92 and 94 to the cam members 61, 62 and at 88 and 90, Fig. 7, to a spherical portion 76 of a universally pivotable hand knob 74, the portion 76 being pivoted on a ball 80 secured to the base plate of an actuator housing 66. The balls 88 and 90 are on axes VV 1 , HH 1 , which pass through the centre of the ball 80 and are at right angles to each other. Clearly the support 40 will follow the pivotal movements of the knob 74. In two other embodiments the mirror support is pivotally connected to the housing by a flexible diaphragm or flexible spoke-like portions.
